| This skit was written, for the most part, on a trip home from New York City, and Mr. Stemple will probably remember this journey (he doesn't -- Ed.)...it was actually right after we had seen the movie
Wet Hot American Summer, so naturally we were quite inspired. But it was an idea that arose from this place on Mount Desert Island in Maine. And there's this marquee that you drive by, up from Bar Harbor to someplace,
I can't remember where, but, on the marquee was written -- just some typical, you know, Maine hick message, and the message was Guns For Sale Free Kittens And I thought the juxtaposition between those two things was too good to pass up on, and there was the idea for Ellsworth Gun and Kitten Outlet. I think as far as the skit itself goes, we had a lot of fun making this. I mean, this was one of the ones we did when we started to get serious about what we were doing. And we realized that we had some great ideas, but we also had to make sure that they were being produced at least relatively well. Walter got a kick out of the fact that one of my lines was something like "*grunt*" and he would play it over and over again...just that one sound: "*grunt* *grunt*" just because he got such a kick out of it. Needless to say, we were up to some hijinks that night. One thing in particular: this was Koobywoob's first performance with us, and we had to...yeah, we had to open up a can of tuna to get her to meow. Which would have been fine, but -- and I guess she must have been really hungry, because all her meows sounded like cries of dying babies. Yeah, they were pretty bad. So I was a little hesitant to use them in the skit, but luckily Walter knocked some sense into me and we ended up using the sounds...so kudos to him. Many kudos. The ones with peanuts and marshmallows. |
