| OK...so in terms of sheer cleverness, this skit is hands-down my favorite. I have yet to convince Walter of its brilliance, but I will someday. Everything here is worded so well!! I'm hesitant to talk about each joke here,
because I want the listener to draw his/her own conclusions, but wow, is it damn funny. Walter and Vic Arious put this one together some time ago, and Walter gave a copy to me, and it just sat for a while. The way it was originally put together, it was hard to tell who was who, since Walter played
both of the customers. So when I actually got to listening to it again, I thought to myself, "this is some terrific material, it just gets lost in the confusion of voices." So I went and recorded my voice for one of the customers, and I think it's a lot clearer now. I'm sure Walter can explain this better than I can, but the basic premise of the skit comes from a road sign -- and actually, there's a picture of that sign on the Dog Store Drive Special Features Page-- that some Tropical Fish Store called "Tropical Fish Rd." And it was almost the kind of thing where you think "duh...what do you think they sell there?" And Walter and Victor went with it. It's actually funny, I had heard the skit a number of times, without knowing where the idea for it came from, and I was driving to Sugarloaf in Maine with Polly Ollyop, and she saw the sign, and we got très excited! So I got my picture taken there -- and actually, if you click on that picture of the sign on top of that same special features page, you'll see the whole picture -- and was all excited to show it to Walter, but it turns out that's the exact sign that inspired the skit! I especially love how the word "Drive" has a double entendre in this skit. "Yeah, it's quite a haul!" Actually, if you listen to Victor saying that line, afterwards you can hear the near-laughter in his voice. It's so great! |
