Checkmate started as a regular strip in the Brown Daily Herald in 1999.   The premise was simple -- a dysfunctional family -- but I hoped to make it unique by utilizing ordinary plastic chess pieces as the characters, then adding my own quirky post-modern sense of humor.

I continued the strip well after its run in the Herald, and even draw new strips today when the mood strikes me.   I use a simplistic approach in its artistry in hopes of instead drawing in viewers by the absurdity of the characters and storylines.
